Jewellery soldering is a repair technique that involves heating metal alloys at high temperatures to join back broken pieces of jewellery together.

The metal alloys used in the soldering process have a lower melting point than the original piece. This is so that the alloy can be heated into a malleable form to adjoin the broken ends of the broken piece, while keeping the piece’s integrity intact.

When the alloy cools down, it hardens back into a solid metal, leaving a clean, strong, uniform joint at the break point. The result is a piece that’s unified and fixed to its original form.

Repairing broken pieces of jewellery together successfully depends on two main factors: how clean the original break is, and the metal type of the original piece.

If the break in the jewellery pieces are clean, soldering the broken pieces back together will be a relatively straightforward fix.

If the break is complex however, it can prove to be troublesome, or impossible altogether. Such examples are breaks with many different pieces coming apart, or breaks with jagged ends. Breaks like these may not have enough surface area for the solder to adhere to, or may be difficult to align with regards to restoring the original dimensions of the piece.

With this in mind, if the broken piece is meaningful to you, and it can’t be soldered back together, a viable option to enjoy it again would be to have it recycled and redesigned.

Besides the complexity of the break, it’s also important to consider the metal type of the original piece. Because of their chemical properties, some metals are more difficult to solder together than others, and as such prove difficult or impossible to repair. An example of this is tungsten, which is a metal that has a hard time working with different solder alloys.

Note that the vast majority of fine jewellery is made out of gold or silver, which are both very easy to work with and have a high success rate with regards to soldering repairs.
