RING RESIZING SERVICES

Generally speaking, most rings can be resized. The exceptions to this are rings that are made out of incredibly hard materials, such as tungsten, or rings that have specially set gemstones that limit their resizing capabilities, such as eternity bands.

We can perform most ring resizing projects within 7 days or less.

The ring resizing process starts with making a cut along the ring’s band. Then, depending on whether the ring is to be sized up or down, two different procedures take place:

Sizing Down

After the initial cut, another cut is made along the ring’s shank. Then, the metal between them is removed and the open ends of the ring are soldered back together, leading to an overall smaller ring circumference. Depending on how much the ring is to be sized down, the distance between these two cuts would vary.

Sizing Up

For resizing the ring up, after the initial cut is made, the ring is placed upon a specialised ring circumference tool. This tool helps widen the ring to the precise circumference of the size needed. Once the ring is set up to the correct size, metal is then added to join the two cuts together, leading to a ring with a wider circumference.

For both procedures of sizing the rings up or down, extreme care is taken to ensure the protection of any gemstones present. To ensure a seamless finish, we take care to file, clean, and polish the ring at the joints. The end result? A perfect fit.

Resizing a ring typically doesn’t leave a mark on it. There are exceptions to this, however.

Some rings are made out of alloy mixtures that may be hard to match during the resizing process. This means when the ring’s band is cut to be resized, the material that is used to join it back together in either sizing it up or down may not be a 100% match to the original.

While we always strive to use an alloy that highly matches the hue of the original piece, in certain cases a faint band may be left at the resizing point. For each of our resizing projects, we will go over the expectations with you so you know how your finished piece will look.

The number of sizes that a ring can be resized depends on a few factors, namely the ring’s metal, its thickness, and its current size.

As a general rule of thumb, to ensure the structural integrity of the ring, it’s best to keep the resizing to 2 sizes up or down.

Note that there are some certain instances where a ring’s design or setting may place limits on how much it can be resized up or down.

An example of this is with tension set rings, where the ring’s band size plays a role in the setting of the gemstone. In cases like these, the resizing possibilities would be limited, if not impossible altogether.
